Surfactant-induced electroosmotic flow in microfluidic capillaries.

Control of EOF in microfluidic devices is essential in applications such as protein/DNA sizing and high-throughput drug screening. With the growing popularity of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as the substrate for polymeric-based microfludics, it is important to understand the effect of surfactants on EOF in these devices. In this article, we present an extensive investigation exploring chang...

Patterning microfluidic device wettability using flow confinement.

We present a simple method to spatially pattern the surface properties of microfluidic devices using flow confinement. Our technique allows surface patterning with micron-scale resolution. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we use it to pattern wettability to form W/O/W and O/W/O double emulsions.

Chemotactic Behavior of Bacteria Propelled Microbeads in Linear Microfluidic Gradients

Flagellated bacteria have been embraced by the micro-robotics community as a highly efficient microscale actuation method, capable of converting chemical energy into mechanical actuation for microsystems that require a low payload and high rate of actuation. Along with being highly motile, Serratia marcescens (S. marcescens), our bacterium species of interest, is a highly agile biomotor capable...

Microfluidic device for primary tumor spheroid isolation

BACKGROUND Traditional two-dimensional (2-D) monolayer cell culture is vastly different from in vivo physiological conditions, which can lead to inaccurate or insufficient data in areas where response and efficacy within humans are being investigated, such as drug discovery, pathology studies, etc. Misleading results arise from two main disadvantages of monolayer cell culture. First, after seve...

Solute Dispersion by Electroosmotic Flow in Nonuniform Microfluidic Channels

Introduction Dispersion is a phenomenon that determines the resolution of several types of liquid phase chromatography, and is an important component of overall transport through electrokinetic flow systems. The severe dispersion of solute as it travels through a U-turn, for example, has attracted recent attention for this reason [1]. In “ideal” electroosmotic flow through uniform, straight cha...
